Sustainable facility management

Sustainability

In recent years sustainability has been a very popular topic. So popular in fact that it cannot be overlooked by fm sector. One reason why it became so popular might be the fact that it helps both the comapny and the environment.

Although there is a clear evidence of financial benefits that sustainability causes, there is a perception of high costs to achieve it (Especially in older buildings). Another problem is that even new buidlings are built without considering their future maintenance, which makes the eco-friendly management of this facility much harder.

Preventive maintenance

Lot of money and time is wasted by companies not using their equipment to it’s full potential, before having to replace it. This can be avoided by practicing preventive maintenance. It enables the company to use their equipment longer and therefore avoid unnecessary expenses.

The best way how to keep up with maintenance is by choosing the correct fm software, which lets you track asset’s age, maintenance history and reminds you when another check up is necessary. As an added benefit, thanks to automated facility software, there is no need for paper work, which might get lost or thrown away by mistake.

Sustainability certification

It is fundamental to recognize sustainable FM practice as a key component to enhancing organizational competiveness.

On average one third of all customers care about the environmental impact of the companies they support, therefore companies which focus on sustainability not only save on energy expenses, they can also attract new customers.

To obtain a sustainability certificate, a building must meet many qualifications. However, the right fm software will make this difficult process much easier.

For older facilities, replacement of some major building systems might be necessery in order to make them more eco-friendly or to receive a certification such as LEED (USA) BREEAM (UK), DGNB (Germany) and SBToolCZ (ČR).

Day-to-day operations

Implementing the right energy management system in order to lower and improve energy consumption and water use is crucial. By monitoring and managing electricity consumption and water usage, facility managers can have a positive impact on the environment around them while reducing costs of facility maintenance.

One of the most basic improvements that any company can implement, with virtualy no expenses, is recycling. Creating an eco-friendly culture within a company can have positive impact not only on the workforce but also the community as a whole.
